REIGATE WARGAMES GROUP

BuiltWithNOF

A variety of wargaming periods are played at the club. Here is a brief introduction to each.

ANCIENTS/MEDIEVAL

The club has about 16 players that game this period and on a typical club night we usually have 3/4+ games being played on a typical weeknight meeting. Games are organised in advance via e-mail, so if you contact the club secretary we can try our best to get you a game on your first visit.

We use the Field of Glory rule set and mainly play using 15mm figures, although a few members have some 25mm armies that are occasionally dusted off.

A lot of the players take part in competitions across the UK (many organised by the British Historical Games Society) and around the World (South Africa, USA, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Italy are some of the countries Reigate players have wargamed in).  And we have a few former World and National Champions to speak of.. However although small in number we have a cross section of experience and so new comers should not feel intimidated and are welcomed.

We also run a club competition each year, with an exceptionally well painted 54mm Turcoman Archer as 1st the  prize with lovely 25mm miniatures for 2nd (Richard the Lionheart) and 3rd (Hannibal).

Armies used cover the full spectrum of ancient and medieval times.  Club members own between them armies from the earliest times (Sumerian, Egyptian, Assyrian, Mitanni) through to the end of the Medieval Period (Wars of the Roses, Hungarian, Teutonic Knights, Ottoman Turks) and many in between (Maori, Chinese, Arab). There are several club members with a huge historical knowledge and large libraries, so help is on hand if you want to know about the historical side of the hobby.

New comers, and new armies are always welcome.

NAPOLEONICS

The club has about 6 players that game this period. If you contact the club secretary we can let you know when someone is running a game.

We currently use the “In the Grand Manner” rule set, originally developed by Peter Gilder. We exclusively use 25mm figures. Members own between them enough figures to do all of the main powers of the Napoleonic Wars (France, Britain, Russia, Prussia and Austria) along with Bavarians, Saxons and the odd Spaniard.  The emphasis is usually on BIG games, but smaller divisional size actions are also gamed.

The games are played on the clubs own array of terrain boards, with many of the players contributing some excellently painted buildings and terrain to each game.

New comers are always welcome.

FANTASY

The club has about 4 players who regularly play fantasy. Rules are of the Warhammer variety played in different scales.

Occasionally a “Blood Bowl” tournament is held, with many members having long standing teams of elves, beastmen and the undead.

If you contact the club secretary we can tell you whether anyone is planning a game.

WORLD WAR 2

The club has about 5 players that game this period and on a typical club night we may have one big game being played. Often this is based on a historical scenario. If you contact the club secretary we can try our best to get you a game on your first visit.

We currently use the “Rapid Fire” rule set and play using 20mm figures and vehicles. Members own between them enough figures to do the “Russian Front”, “Western Europe ’44”, “Western Desert”, “Burma” and even the odd “Fall of France” game.

The games are played on the clubs own array of terrain boards, with many of the players contributing some excellently painted buildings and terrain to each game.

OTHER HISTORICAL PERIODS

These periods are gamed less frequently.

Vietnam, fought using 20mm figures. Members have Charlie, NVA, Grunts and even a few Aussies. Armour and air support are plentiful.

American Civil War, fought using 15mm figures. Members have a large collection of the Blue and the Grey.

There is also the occasional Western Gunfight and World War One and Two Naval encounters (with very small ships), the latter both fought under the General Quarters rule set.

If you contact the club secretary we can tell you whether anyone is planning a game.

New comers, with new armies and in new periods are always welcome.

NEW PROJECTS

A new project at the club is the Sudan Campaigns 1881-1898 using 20mm figures, hoping to complete in 2009. Using adapted Pony Wars rules as used by Peter Gilder when he ran the Wargames Holiday Centre.
