Ghaznavid, 962AD to 1186AD

 Book 3, List 63

Another Islamic morph army based on the Mikes Models figures purchased at the Triples in 1999.

It contains all the "usual suspects" of an eastern Islamic horse based army - Cv(S) & (O), LH(S) & (O) - however, it also has Elephants which is where it's point of difference is. On the downside from this it's infantry is much weaker than say the Abbasids, with just 6 Dailami and 6 Reg Sp(I) supported by Ps(O). It does have some filler type infantry such as Ax(X) and Bw(I) in small numbers, but is very much a cavalry army.

It is also one of those lists that is very hard to come up with a list that you like, it seems to promise more than it delivers. To justify using this list you really have to take 2 elephants otherwise you are better off using a different Islamic army such as the Khurasanian, Khwarismian or Abbasid which have the same sort of troops but can get better structure. In fact using Regular generals you generally do not reach the de facto average of 3 commands of 18.5 EE. If you take more than 2 elephants you have to accept even smaller commands with the inherent risk that that has.

Not surprisingly this is another manoeuvre army. To win it will use it's PIP swapping to allow it to pin the enemy with the LH and strike with the Cv at a weak point. It's infantry, the Ax(S) and supported Sp(I), are best used in support of an El, probably with some Cv support as well. This makes a very useful combined arms team that can be relied on to cause problems for quite a lot of enemy troops - best put them with the C-in-C as they will need the extra PIP to be effective.

At larger AP values the Hindu Indian ally can be useful, and brings more elephants to the army.

This is an army that has really suffered from the v3.0 changes. The move in the direction of larger armies exposes the weaknesses in the Ghaznavid list, where it's LH especially are a problem as it could do with at least 6 LH(F).

ghaznavid400apanticv.txt - a 400AP army based on fighting Cv.

ghaznavid400apantikn.txt - a 400AP army for fighting Kn, but has Irr generals.

ghaznavidfordoubles.txt - a 500AP army for the SOA doubles with Hindu Indian ally.

ghaznavidforworlds.txt - 400AP mostly mounted army used by Pete Reilly at the World Team Championships, where our team - The Khoregate Expeditionary Force - came 12th. It's insanely small.

ghaznavidforleedsdoubles02.txt - 500AP army for the Leeds round of the 2002 SOA doubles. It's quite small but with the Hindu ally is quite tough.
